100 Meatless Innovations

The multi-billion dollar meat industry is now being disrupted with a range of meatless innovations that are challenging the way consumers view health, animal welfare and the environment. There are now a range of lab-grown meats, entirely plant-based steaks and burgers that "bleed" beetroot juice, as well as sustainable seafood substitutes that are being created from tomatoes.

As the demand for more plant-based meat alternatives has grown over the past few years, a number of brands that are known for their meat products are now venturing into the world of vegetarian and vegan cuisine. This is particularly true of fast food chains -- White Castle now serves black bean sliders, in Finland, McDonald's introduced the McVegan burger and Taco Bell assembled two guides to vegan and vegetarian eating at its chain. For some brands, the success of serving all-vegan food has inspired the creation of entirely new spinoff restaurants, such as with Pret A Manger and Veggie Pret.
