Lifestyle & Enjoyment

Customer Experience
Download the Customer Experience Trend Report
This module focuses on the third and fourth cues of convenience: Lifestyle and Enjoyment. Though these ideas are subjective, one thing everyone can agree on is how attention paid to user experience and automation can improve consumers' lives exponentially.

Automation and UX can be applied to dining, retail, hospitality and beyond, but it's most interesting to see these principles applied to leisure and hobbies. For example, how can the process of enjoying beer become more convenient? What are your customers' hobbies, and how could they become more automated?

Unstaffed Convenience
Grocers opt for staff-less options that simplify store layouts
Implications - Unstaffed grocers provide two distinctions – tech-enhanced convenience and a restructuring of how the layouts of these traditional spaces are designed. With staff-less grocers comes a crucial curation and simplification of retail displays, as customers can no longer seek out the assistance of employees in order to find and complete their purchases. The inevitable reforms associated with this shift set a precedent for how other retail spaces can redesign store layouts in a way that best suits the needs of customers.

Post-Crisis Retail
Brick and mortar spaces will likely undergo long term changes post-COVID
Trend - After the restrictions on public movement due to COVID-19 have eased or lifted around the world, retail spaces will still require additional safety measures in order to keep infection risks at a minimum. This will occur (and is already occurring) in the form of contactless payment systems, limiting customers in-store, and redesigned layouts that enforce physical distance between customers.

24-hr Retail
Retailers outside of food and beverage opt for round-the-clock consumer care
Trend - On-demand, 24-hr services are moving beyond QSR and food establishments into other retail spaces like fashion and beauty. Realizing the importance of customer care, brands are seeking to offer elements of convenience, personalization and access to their goods whenever they're needed. Such on-demand tactics by retailers, especially those not typically associated with such accessibility, speaks to the growing consideration of consumer needs among brands, to the point where retailers are adapting their business models and operating processes to better support them.

Retailers build systems to support convenience-oriented checkout
Trend - In recent years cashier-less convenience stores have grown in popularity, and while not all retailers are able to adapt to such developments, some retailers are leveraging components of a similar technology to offer consumers in-aisle checkout. Such payment options enable retailers to provide a more tailored shopping experience for convenience-minded consumers.

Retailers shrink their urban footprint and adopt hyper-local cultural norms
Trend - Responding to today's tumultuous retail landscape, merchants serving urban areas across categories are opting for condensed stores with a hyper-local focus in design as well as a curated selection of products and services. Curated Grocer
Grocers debut more curated versions of their stores to redefine their brand
Implications - Allowing shoppers to have a more streamlined and occasionally up-leveled experience, grocers are turning to smaller format stores to allow them to experiment with a new focus on specific products or consumers. This more focused approach not only provides a more convenient experience for the shopper, but more importantly allows companies in this space to experiment with their brand experience as well.

Implications - The incorporation of customized branded apps into the consumer’s in-person shopping journey is on the rise, with brands curating or elevating the brick-and-mortar experience by providing more information on the products in question, and by generally easing the shopping experience. Stores that fully integrate smart features are increasingly common
Implications - Brands have been incorporating smart elements into their retail spaces, or toying with the idea, for some time now, but some are taking it to the next level with stores that fully integrate smart functions, much like many homes now do. The full integration of smart features into brick-and-mortar spaces speaks to the rising value that consumers place on both omnichannel and highly personalized purchase journeys.
