25 Examples of 3D-Printed Garments

From Adrenaline-Sensing Dresses to Sculptural Cyborg Couture:

These 3D-printed garments demonstrate how new technology is changing the design process. Traditionally, the process of manufacturing a new garment is both long and labor-intensive. However, 3D printing technology could help to streamline and simplify the design process in the years to come.

Instead of constructing clothing by hand, 3D printing allows designers to manipulate their garments with digital tools. These digital renderings allow designers to conceptualize unusual shapes and patterns that have never been seen before. For example, Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht constructed a line of dresses that transformed different automotive parts into experiential couture.

In addition to helping designers come up with creative designs, 3D-printing also allows these individuals to utilize fabric that is not traditionally used to make clothing. For instance, a California couple produced a mesh bikini out of a material that can absorb contaminants from the water. Adidas also designed a line of athletic apparel that is made from titanium-blended yarn, which helps to keep the wearer cool.
