3D-Printed Childcare Walls

Woh Hup 3D Prints Childcare Centre Exterior Walls

A construction team led by Woh Hup used large-scale 3D concrete printing to produce the exterior walls of a childcare centre in Singapore, with the first story printed in two days featuring sensor-monitored, cast-in-place concrete. The project involved partners including the National University of Singapore, the Building and Construction Authority and the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster and was built as part of a 348-unit condominium development in Woodlands.

The printed walls served as structural elements and underwent compression, bending and shear tests; the process cut labor and manhours versus traditional formwork while technicians monitored on-site concrete quality and used a mix that currently increases cement content. The team is experimenting with up to 60% recycled glass powder in the mix to halve CO2 emissions while preserving strength.

For residents and developers, the method promises faster, lower-labor exterior construction, quieter night shifts and greater design freedom for architects, though material-emissions trade-offs remain a focus as the sector scales.

Large-scale 3D Concrete Printing
Enables rapid, low-labor production of structural exterior elements with complex geometries that reduce formwork dependence.
Sensor-monitored Cast-in-place Systems
Integrates real-time quality data into the printing process to support consistent structural performance and remote process validation.
Recycled-content Low-carbon Mixes
Demonstrates material formulations that aim to halve embodied CO2 by substituting cement with high proportions of recycled glass powder while retaining strength.

Industries Being Reshaped

Construction & Infrastructure
Shortened build cycles and quieter night-shift operations for urban projects through on-site printing of structural walls.
Modular Housing Development
Favors greater architectural freedom and faster assembly timelines by producing bespoke, load-bearing modules directly at the site.
Materials Manufacturing
Creates demand for engineered binder systems and recycled aggregate processing to balance performance with reduced emissions.
