The Unnatural History Museum of Singapore Shows Mechanical Creatures

— September 16, 2025 — Art & Design
The Unnatural History Museum of Singapore presents a parody of natural history museums during Singapore Design Week, created by Kinetic Singapore to reflect the country’s identity as a nation by design. Central to the exhibition is a six-metre Merlion fossil, the first skeletal depiction of the national mythical creature. Other featured artefacts include a robotic swan developed by the National University of Singapore and PUB to monitor water quality, as well as cyborg cockroaches built for search-and-rescue missions.

Additional innovations on display range from an autonomous nano drone designed by Polybee for plant pollination to colourful Vertical Columbaria that reimagine funeral urns in high-rise form. The exhibition setting adopts architectural motifs such as Roman-inspired columns, porticos, and classical-style cabinets, reinforcing the parody while celebrating inventive solutions to the city-state’s resource challenges. The project highlights how speculative design can reframe cultural history and inspire unconventional approaches to the future.
