The 2011 Egyptian riots have shaken the middle east and the world, but rather than being an isolated event, they are merely the latest in human civilization’s longstanding affinity for public protest.

Thomas Jefferson once said that "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all," and his words could all too easily be applied to the 2011 Egyptian riots. In the spirit of this quote, however, this collection looks back on some important protest innovations, triumphs and failures.
