Nobel Center by David Chipperfield Architects Will Anchor a Space

— January 21, 2026 — Art & Design
Nobel Center is a new cultural institution designed by David Chipperfield Architects in central Stockholm that will provide a permanent home for activities linked to the Nobel Prize, including exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and public programmes focused on science, literature, and peace.

The building will be located along Stadsgårdskajen at Slussen, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, and is planned to complete by 2031 with construction beginning in 2027. The design positions the ground floor as an extension of the public realm, with entrances on both the north and south sides, a foyer with a shop and restaurant, and roof terraces overlooking the waterfront. Large windows and curated openings are used to frame views toward the city and archipelago, linking interior activities visibly to the urban context.

The structure is composed of interconnected volumes that respond to the topography of Södermalm and relate in scale to historic waterfront buildings across the water in Gamla stan. Materials include a primarily timber structural frame to reduce embodied carbon and a façade of reclaimed red brick that references Stockholm’s longstanding brick tradition and civic architecture.
