Experimental Pencils is a design project by Korean studio BKID and presented under the name “Write Draw Think.” The collection features sixteen distinct writing tools developed through careful observation of how people hold pencils, move their hands and interact with paper surfaces. Objects such as pencils shaped for solo focus, tools that support collaborative drawing by multiple users, and textured barrels to alter pressure and line quality seek to transform everyday writing into a more tactile, intentional act. Each instrument aims to offer a different physical and sensory experience rather than a uniform output.
The project treats writing as a physical performance rather than a passive act. Tools with sharpened graphite emphasize structural clarity in letters, while rounded shapes soften gesture and encourage flowing strokes. The pencils remain fully functional for drawing or writing, but their unconventional geometry and varied grips invite users to reconsider the connection between mind, body and mark-making.
