100 Monochromatic Design Items

From Gradient Classrooms to Shaded Editorials:

Monochromatic design is simply the use of one color in varying shades. Minimalism has gained traction in many industries, including fashion and architecture, but the concept has also become evident in social media, packaging and photography.

The pleasing aesthetic is simple but incredibly effectual. Muted color palettes brings the focus onto specific objects and elements within the design. Artist Fabian Burgy is known for his monochromatic art installations. He uses shades of black, white and gray to create optical illusions that confuse and excite its audience.

Yet, monochromatic design can also be created with vibrant colors and its impact is completely different. Instead of bringing the focus to one specific area, the attention is now on the full item. Voyage's packaging for its sparkling wine is shades of bright colors, like magenta, which draws consumers focus onto the entire bottle. The packaging is cohesive but evokes strong emotions and makes the bottle pop-out when lined up against competitor products.

Minimalism in design comes off as contemporary and modern. When looking to grab attention and stay relevant, brands should consider utilizing monochromatic designs.
