17 Innovations for Diabetics

From Implantable Glucose Sensors to Color-Changing Tattoos:

There are several designers out there fighting the good fight and creating several inventive innovations for diabetics to help them manage their disease. In 2010 it was estimated that 6.4% of the world's population lives with some form of diabetes; that's a whopping 285 million people. With the cure continuing to elude us and poor diets contributing to increasingly high numbers of type 2 diabetes, we have seen a massive influx of diabetic-centric products and awareness campaigns designed to take some of the weight off the shoulders of those who suffer from the disease.

From diabetic watches to contact lenses that change color when your blood sugar drops, health care developers and designers have been hard at work creating products that not only help people manage their disease but make a little more bearable. There has been especially strong emphasis on appealing to youth. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed early in life, as a result innovations such as color-changing tattoos try to get youths interested and involved in their health.

These innovations for diabetics attempt to make a difficult disease a little easier to bear.
