Officina 82 transformed Alpine learning into a burrow-like underground space with 'Tana delle Marmotte,' a permanent installation for children and teenagers at the Pavillon station in the Aosta Valley. The project uses a reversible layout, allowing the structure to sit lightly in the mountain rather than relying on a permanent concrete base.
Three prefabricated Corten steel conduits form the shell, including a central tube and two access pipes, while spruce plywood ribs line the interior. Transparent acrylic portholes and LED strips guide visitors through the space and frame the surrounding terrain.
At 2,173 meters, the elevation makes the installation as much about landscape as about learning. The reversible construction and dry assembly also point to a more adaptable way to build educational spaces in sensitive alpine settings.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Reversible Architecture
- Temporary, dry-assembled structures introduce new models for low-impact development in fragile environments where permanence is increasingly scrutinized.
- Immersive Nature Learning
- Burrow-like educational spaces blend play, ecology, and sensory design to deepen engagement with local landscapes and environmental systems.
- Prefabricated Alpine Design
- Modular components suited to remote terrain create possibilities for faster, lighter, and more adaptable construction in high-altitude destinations.
Where This Applies
- Education
- Experiential learning environments are expanding beyond classrooms as schools and cultural institutions seek place-based formats that connect students with ecology and geography.
- Architecture
- Sensitive-site construction is evolving through reversible layouts, prefabricated shells, and material systems that minimize disruption while preserving design impact.
- Tourism
- Destination operators can differentiate mountain experiences through educational installations that combine landscape interpretation, family engagement, and sustainable infrastructure.
