Old Mine Tunnel-Integrated Museums

Atelier XÜK Integrates Old Mine Tunnels into a Chinese Museum

Design firm Atelier XÜK has created a unique design of a mining museum dubbed Huanglong Mountain Zisha Mineral Source Museum. It is defined by its glossy blue and brown tiles that are incorporated to reflect the look of mineral veins throughout the exterior. To encourage more visitors to engage with the site, the firm integrated old mine tunnels directly into the museum for a unique explorative route.

The studio explained, "The design appropriately transforms [the site] based on the principles of minimum intervention, historical restoration, and activation, to make it a reference for the protection and renewal of architectural heritage. A vortex-shaped exhibition route from the ground to the earth in the museum connects the three exhibition halls on the ground floor and the underground mine tunnel into one complete space."
