The Aquaponic Eel Bar is a newly opened restaurant in Brussels that invites brave diners to enjoy a meal underneath an aquarium filled with live eels.
The restaurant features a whimsical aesthetic as the interior is comprised of vertical architecture, like its pillars that are integrated into the aquarium's structure – which work to draw the eye upward toward the tank. The aquarium serves a purpose that extends past a dreamy aesthetic, as it provides a natural filtration system that fills the entire restaurant with fresh air. The aquaponic system takes place as the eel's excretion feeds the plants, which are later used as an ingredient by the restaurant. In return, the thriving plant life filters and cleanses the water for the eels, keeping them healthy, while requiring minimal maintenance from the restaurant's employees.
