From virtual dementia simulators to 360-degree photojournalism, there are plenty of business applications for virtual reality technology that involve training and education.

Graduates of Swinburne University in Australia recently announced the development of a virtual dementia simulator designed to put caretakers in training in the shoes of the patients they will eventually care for. The innovative virtual experience offers a rough estimation of the perspective of a dementia patient and goes a long way in terms of developing empathy and compassion.

Separately, virtual reality technology was incorporated into a United Nations summit at the organization's New York Headquarters. Utilizing the Samsung Gear VR headset, the campaign momentarily transported world leaders into Za'atari refugee camp, located close to the Jordan-Syria border, as a means of inspiring empathy around the situation.
