Sword Health Launches Its Virtual Physical Therapy in Portugal’s NHS

Sword Health introduced an AI-supported virtual physical therapy service that Portugal's National Health Service now prescribes for patients with common musculoskeletal conditions. The program pairs clinician oversight with motion-tracking technology and guided exercise sessions, featuring AI that analyzes patient movements and provides real-time feedback to improve exercise form. The rollout covers conditions including lower back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, sprains and muscle strains, while integrating with existing NHS care pathways to streamline clinician referrals and patient onboarding.

Patients receive an initial clinical evaluation and the necessary equipment at home to complete therapist-designed rehabilitation programs, while clinicians can monitor progress and adjust treatment plans remotely.

The deployment expands access to evidence-based rehabilitation, is expected to significantly reduce treatment wait times, and reflects the growing adoption of AI-enabled remote care within public healthcare systems.
