From Hyperrealistic Celeb Sketches to Tragic Pop Portrayals
Josh Triantafilou — March 12, 2012 — Pop Culture
Despite the artistic licenses taken by their creators, these celebrity caricatures are strangely spot-on. Cartoonish, eccentric renditions of well-known figures are nothing new -- periodicals around the world have been doing this since the 19th century.
What is new, however, is that these celebrity caricatures don’t make explicit attempts at satire. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes that cigar is funny to look at. This last point should be well known to anyone who wanders the Internet. Humorous, light-hearted images engage viewers without burdening them with too much information and subtext.
These celebrity caricatures take already notable characters and make them stand out even more; perhaps publicists and agents should take note.
