From Hashtag Currency Shops to Automated Grocery Stores

With hyper niche services, flexible delivery systems and broader payment options, the most popular 2014 retail trends show a shift towards extreme customer convenience. Despite the popularity of online shopping, when visiting a brick-and-mortar location, most shoppers still have a phone in hand, which makes it easy for retailers to reach out with augmented reality experiences, or offer beacon technology to deliver relevant information in-store so that shopping is as hassle-free as possible.

Rather than a traditional transaction that involves the exchange of cash for goods, another trend in retail over the past year has been for brands to experiment with trading tweets, Instagram photos or even calories for merchandise, as in the case of Colun Light's fitness pop-up shop.
