Photographer Daniel Zakharov created a collection of depressing animal photos in 'Modern Wilderness.' Focusing on the dark side of zoos, Zakharov's pictures capture the emotions behind the animal's lifetime of incarceration.

Each picture aims to take a candid look at the animals in their artificial habitats. According to Zakharov, he hoped to "focus on the strange and bizarre daily life of animals." Removed from their natural environments, these animals have no choice but to adapt in their own way. Modern Wilderness seeked to capture the resulting behaviours.

Though the theme behind the pictures might suggest otherwise, the artist did not intend to make a statement about the treatment of animals. Zakharov firmly stated that "My intention was not to criticize zoos."
