BYD is preparing a roomier 'Seagull' EV in China for budget buyers, turning its smallest electric hatch into a five-seat model with rear-wheel drive. The update also swaps in a 95 kW motor and a longer body, moving the low-cost car beyond short city trips.
The second-generation Seagull stretches to 4,205 mm long and uses BYD Blade Batteries in two pack choices. Higher trims add 'Flash Charging,' cutting a major battery refill to five minutes, and the cabin gains a larger center screen with more physical controls. It reaches China next week, with overseas versions expected later as the 'Dolphin Surf' or 'Dolphin Mini.'
Rumored dealer pricing around 85,000 yuan keeps the larger Seagull near the entry end of the EV market, so the added seat and rear-wheel drive widen what buyers can expect at that price. A later rollout of the Dolphin Surf and Mini would export that value-led pitch.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Budget Five-seat Evs
- Affordable electric hatchbacks are expanding from urban runabouts into practical family vehicles, creating white space for value-focused models that combine low pricing with everyday usability.
- Ultra-fast Entry Charging
- Five-minute battery refill claims at budget price points signal a shift in charging expectations, where low-cost EVs can compete on convenience rather than only affordability.
- Global Micro-ev Upsizing
- Compact EV platforms are being stretched and rebadged for export markets, allowing automakers to localize affordable mobility without fully redesigning vehicles.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Electric Vehicles
- Low-cost EV makers are redefining entry-level segments by adding range, space, and performance features once associated with higher-priced models.
- Battery Technology
- Blade-style battery systems and faster charging options strengthen the role of battery innovation as a differentiator in mass-market electric mobility.
- Automotive Retail
- Aggressive dealer pricing for roomier EVs pressures traditional small-car sales models and reshapes consumer expectations around affordability and feature content.
