BYD is expanding Yangwang’s position in the ultra-luxury EV market with a large flagship sedan designed around dramatic proportions, rear-hinged coach doors and new battery technology. Known internally as HU for now, the unnamed model is expected to become the brand’s first vehicle using a solid-state battery, adding a significant technology element to its chauffeur-style design.
The sedan has a long, imposing shape that closely resembles the Rolls-Royce Phantom, while its approximately 5.5-metre length places it alongside large luxury models such as the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class. The coach doors add another visual connection to traditional chauffeur-driven cars, giving the electric model a more theatrical entry and exit.
A test image also shows the sedan at one of BYD’s Flash Charging stations, suggesting that rapid charging will be part of the model’s development. For an EV of this size, charging speed could be an important part of making the large battery-powered format practical for regular use.
Yangwang is combining the visual language of traditional chauffeur cars with technologies associated with the next generation of EVs. The result is a flagship designed to make its luxury positioning immediately visible while also using new battery and charging technology to signal where BYD sees its high-end electric vehicles heading.
