On Sight is a special software, borne out of a collaboration between NASA and Microsoft, that will enable researchers to remotely explore Mars. The software allows the researchers to delve into a virtual Martian landscape using data sent back by the Curiosity rover.
This initiative will give scientists the opportunity to look at data from Mars in a way that lets them recreate the areas around the Curiosity rover as well as map out a 3D virtual environment where different phenomena can be carefully studied and considered.
OnSight effectively gives scientists the ability to traverse Mars whilst sitting in their offices on Earth. The software will be tested soon for mission control operations and could also be used in future rover missions.
