Chocolate; ostensibly, it's one of the simple pleasures in life, but Madecasse is a conscious chocolate brand that recognizes the complexity of the treat. Though chocolate is indeed one of the preferred indulgences the world over, the chocolate industry has some concerning tendencies in it, and Madecasse is devoted to eliminating those.

Like in the coffee industry, the core ingredient of chocolate — i.e. cocoa beans — need to be grown in tropical climates. However, as opposed to the awareness around fair trade coffee, the chocolate industry still takes advantage of the poor farmers growing the beans. Madecasse works directly with Madagascan farmers, buying from the source rather than purchasing through middlemen. This allows the company to serve chocolate made from heirloom cocoa that's more delicious than the average bean, and it also ensure that farmers are compensated fairly for their work.
