20 Examples of Fashion Activism

From Equality-Themed Footwear to Fashion Footprint Calculators:

These examples of fashion activism include equality-themed footwear collections and fashion footprint calculators. Going beyond sustainable manufacturing practices, major and independent fashion brands are more keen on taking political stances and are standing up to raise awareness about important social issues.

Balenciaga's editorial for Spring/Summer 2020 is a standout with photographs captured to mimic election coverage. Another notable example is the recent Stella McCartney x The Beatles 'All Together Now' collection, highlighting iconic visuals from the film Yellow Submarine. The line raises awareness for animal rights and is made using all-vegan fabrics -- with its printed, faux fur coat becoming an instant must-have for fashion fans.

Other examples of fashion activism include the AWAKE NY collaboration with Bronx-based Ghetto Gastro. Titled 'Food, Clothes, Shelter,' the charitable project was launched in celebration of Black History Month last year. In addition to distributing 100 meals to those in need AWAKE NY and Ghetto Castro launched an exclusive clothing line that celebrated African American and Afro Latinx community activists and leaders.
