Compostable Sole Sneakers

Stella McCartney and Balena Updated the S-Wave Sport Sneaker Style

Material science company Balena teamed up with Stella McCartney to launch a new version of the S-Wave Sport sneakers featuring BioCir Flex soles, a material that biodegrades into renewable biomass when composted in industrial facilities. Balena’s BioCir Flex material is made from castor beans, oils, and polysaccharides and dyed with natural cinnamon. Performance-wise, this material is said to be as durable as TPU and as flexible as rubber.

While the white version of these shoes uses Piñayarn paneling, which incorporates pineapple leaf fibers sourced from agricultural waste, the wine version has uppers crafted from an engineered recycled polyester knit as an alternative to virgin fossil fuel-based fibers.

The new sneakers are now available as part of Stella McCartney’s Autumn 2025 collection.
