GPS-Controlled Venue Designs

Outpost Office Designed the Drawing Fields with GPS and Robots

Outpost Office created a temporary performance venue using robots controlled by GPS. The Ohio-based studio designated a grassy area as the venue space. The team used water-soluble paint to draw site-specified areas to produce an unconventional stage setup.

The robots drew temporary patterns using non-toxic paint that recalled sports line-markings, acting as a temporary art installation and venue space in one. Ragdale was the chosen site for the project -- a former summerhouse of the late architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in Illinois. Drawing Fields was designed as a response to the Ragdale Ring competition's theme of mobility. Designers were challenged to build temporary performance venues on the Ragdale grounds. Each field drawing took two days for the robots to install.
