Tongue-Numbing Ramen Shops

Karakatta Ramen is Standing Out From the Pack by Focusing on Heat

Karakatta ramen, in New York, is standing out from the hordes of ramen restaurants by devoting itself producing a spicy product. Its founders chefs Takatoshi Nagara and Takayuki Watanabe, who are also the owners of Mr. Taka, decided to riff on the classic ramen shop by focusing on something more unique in the New York food scene. The restaurant is designed to mimic the small ramen shops of Tokyo, and manages to feel more cozy rather than uncomfortable.

The main ramen menu currently offers four options: spicy ginger stamina; a classic butter-miso, Taka’s shoyu and a spicy veggie curry. Spiciness for each option can be tailored on a scale of one to three, with each level containing less of more chili oil. The ginger based option is the only one to combine chili oil and fresh chopped chilies, making it the spiciest bowl of the four. The menu is rounded out by a few appetizers as well as a few rice bowls. However, spicy ramen is the main star of Karakatta ramen and should definitely be enjoyed on a long winter night.
