Architecture studio Sinato added a mezzanine reading room to a Japanese apartment by raising the ceiling.

The Tokyo-based architects partially elevated the ceiling, allowing the timber mezzanine to rest inside. The elevated platform, which allows for 1.4 meters of head space, is supported by several columns, which have the double function of dividing the space. On the lower level, the columns become the framework for two bedroom walls and a study space. From below, the mezzanine is obscured by parts of the ceiling.

Between the mezzanine and supporting column, there is a void that allows light to enter the reading room. It also allows people using mezzanine the opportunity to look down into the floor below.
