Zerocircle introduced a heat-sealable hydrophobic coating for paper cups, featuring natural polymers designed to replace conventional polyethylene linings and PFAS treatments. Derived from seaweed and plant-based materials, the coating creates water- and grease-resistant barriers for hot beverages while remaining compatible with existing paper recycling streams.
The coating can be formed and seam-sealed on standard converting equipment without adhesive and is designed to be repulped without separate collection. Zerocircle said the material has been tested with boiling water and hot coffee, maintaining performance up to 90 degrees Celsius. The company is preparing commercial samples and working with QSR chains, caterers and packaging distributors across Europe ahead of targeted deployment by the end of 2026.
For brands and consumers, the coating offers a plastic-free alternative for hot beverage cups while supporting recyclability, food-contact safety and broader circular-packaging goals.
