London's historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane has received an extensive restoration led by Haworth Tompkins architecture firm. Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the oldest continuous-use theatre in the entire world, and the theatre's owners requested that the integrity of this historic space remain intact.
While keeping the venue's original aesthetic, the architects sought to optimize the audience and performer experience. One of the primary restorations was the venue's foyer and cantilevered staircases - which received a complete upgrade. Additionally, the architect's added street-level auditorium access to ensure the venue is accessible. The theatre's seats were also redone - thus creating a comfortable experience and an improved sightline to the stage. The seats were also arranged in a tighter curve which helped create an intimate connection between the audience and the performers.
