Gibson Has Introduced the Original Collection

— March 11, 2026 — Art & Design
Gibson's Original Collection delivers a series of three reimagined flat-top acoustic guitars handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana. The models commemorate the company's 100 years of acoustic instrument production that began in 1926 and shaped the sound of generations of musicians across folk, rock, and popular music.

Gibson's Original Collection includes the SJ-200 60s Original, LG-2 50s Original, and the J-160E Original models. Each flat-top acoustic guitar design is connected to a rich history. The SJ-200 60s Original, for example, pays tribute to the model known as the King of the Flat-Tops. It features a AAA figured maple body, solid AAA Sitka spruce top, vintage-correct nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and the distinctive no-border pickguard that defined its 1960s appearance. The LG-2 50s Original, on the other hand, evokes the small-body acoustic favored for its balanced voice and projection. It is constructed with a solid Sitka spruce top with scalloped X-bracing, solid mahogany back and sides, and equipped with an L.R. Baggs pickup for stage-ready performance. The J-160E Original returns as an acoustic-electric hybrid with a solid Sitka spruce top and scalloped X-bracing, replacing the laminated construction of earlier versions

Trend Themes

  1. Heritage Revival in Instruments — Centennial-themed reissues and historically accurate finishes signal demand for legacy storytelling that can reshape premium product lines and brand value propositions.
  2. Handcrafted Local Manufacturing — Small-batch, artisanal production in locations like Bozeman highlights a shift toward provenance and craft that could redefine supply-chain narratives and consumer willingness to pay for locality.
  3. Hybrid Acoustic-electric Integration — The return of acoustic-electric hybrids with modern pickups indicates convergence between traditional instrument design and contemporary performance tech, altering expectations for stage-ready instruments.

Industry Implications

  1. Musical Instruments Manufacturing — Revived classic models with premium materials and vintage finishes point to opportunities for niche high-margin product tiers within established instrument makers.
  2. Live Performance Equipment — Integrated pickup systems and stage-focused features suggest new product ecosystems that blend instrument design with live-sound optimization.
  3. Luxury Goods and Collectibles — Limited-edition, historically linked guitars create collectible value narratives that can intersect with luxury branding, authentication services, and secondary-market platforms.
