The Take a Bow Centre by O’donnellbrown Reimagines Theater Structures

The Take a Bow Centre by O’DonnellBrown repurposes a Georgian stable block in rural Somerset into a multifunctional space for theatre and rehearsal. The design retains the original masonry shell while inserting a striking new structure of glulam timber and glass. The intervention forms a vaulted roof that lifts at the centerline to create a dramatic interior void. Large sliding wings open the volume to the garden, creating a flexible indoor-outdoor performance threshold.

Within the centre, acoustics and daylight are orchestrated through the vault’s curvature, seating risers, and adjustable light filters. The layout offers adaptable staging, workspaces, and gathering areas while preserving the simple character of the original block. By knitting old and new, the Take a Bow Centre becomes both a local cultural anchor and a refined design gesture rooted in sensitivity, craft, and spatial generosity.
