Florally Flavored Sour Ales

This Ale Projects Sour Passionfruit and Delicate Hints of Hibiscus

Epic Brewing Company didn't become one of the most venerated purveyors of small-batch artisanal craft beer by keeping things simple and boring, and the Salt Lake City-based brewery is making that clear yet again with the introduction of Flower Power Sour, an oak-aged sour ale that features a spectacular blend of flavors.

The Flower Power Sour ale was made by taking sour ale that had been matured for months in an oak cask, before infusing it with passion fruit puree. Following this step, the concoction was blended with Epic Brewing's Belgian Golden Strong Ale, itself a classic of the brewery's stable. However, Epic Brewing didn't stop there, adding a dose of hibiscus at the last minute to brighten up the brew, give it a marvelous pink tone and balance out the fruitiness with floral tones.

Just as tantalizing to the eye as it is to the taste buds, this sour ale represents a masterclass in balancing flavors in the sour beer category.
