Battered Plastic Meals

Plastic Oceans UK's Fish and Chips Meal Represents a Possible Future

To bring attention to the fact that millions upon millions of tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year—and this amount is only predicted to increase if changes are not made—environmental charity Plastic Oceans UK created an awareness-raising stunt centered around fish and chips meals.

When people order fish and chips from a menu, they know exactly what they are going to get—battered fish and a side of fries. Plastic Oceans UK worked with a local fish and chips shop to serve meals made with battered plastic instead and captured the reactions of people with a hidden camera.

As well as bringing awareness to research that suggests there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by the year 2050, this stunt also reminds consumers that many creatures that live in the water often mistakenly consume plastic as food.
