Anne Carrier Architectes, in consortium with Labonté Marcil architectes, has realized the expansion of Bibliothèque L'Octogone in Montreal's LaSalle borough. This project successfully transformed a beloved but spatially constrained community institution into a vibrant, light-filled civic hub while preserving its iconic octagonal identity.
Anne Carrier Architectes' proposal for this project reimagines the library as a comprehensive 21st-century cultural destination. The designers nearly doubled the area from 2,645 to 4,500 square meters through the strategic addition of a new floor and three distinct architectural lanterns. Anne Carrier Architectes' approach to the Bibliothèque L'Octogone expansion demonstrates a profound respect for the existing structure, as the original octagonal volume is preserved and extended. This decision also maximized the reuse of the concrete slab and structural framework to avoid up to 261,000 kilograms of carbon emissions and divert 870 cubic meters of construction waste from landfills.
