The Green Box is a 115-square-metre residential renovation by Archiwave Architects in Chalandri, Greece. The project converts a former office into a home for a young couple. A custom green bookcase forms the central element of the interior and organizes the overall layout. The shelving volume incorporates library storage and closets. Open living spaces occupy one side of the home, and three bedrooms are positioned beyond the bookcase. An opening above the structure brings natural light from the living area into the primary bedroom.
The bookcase extends across an entire wall and wraps around a corner with a grid of openings for books and household objects. A curved white wall marks the entrance and guides circulation through the apartment. Oak cabinetry defines the kitchen, where a perforated storage screen is integrated into the millwork. A marble island anchors the space and introduces a contrasting material palette. Green accents appear on door trims and furnishings throughout the residence.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Library-centered Living
- Built-in bookcase volumes are redefining residential layouts by combining storage, privacy, circulation, and identity within a single architectural feature.
- Office-to-home Conversions
- Former workplaces are becoming flexible urban residences, creating openings for retrofit systems that translate commercial floorplates into warm, functional homes.
- Light-sharing Interiors
- Interior openings and partial partitions support brighter compact homes, signaling demand for spatial solutions that distribute daylight without sacrificing room separation.
Sectors Adopting This
- Residential Architecture
- Adaptive layouts anchored by multifunctional structures point to new residential models where furniture, walls, and storage merge into space-making systems.
- Interior Design
- Color-blocked millwork and sculptural circulation elements are expanding the role of interiors from decoration to organizing infrastructure within renovated homes.
- Custom Furniture
- Large-scale built-ins with integrated closets, shelving, and screens reveal growth potential for modular furniture that performs like architecture in compact dwellings.
