Adaptive Family Residences

A 1920s London Home is Transformed into No Ordinary House

The renovation of this 1920s London dwelling transforms the traditional layout into open, sustainable living tailored for modern family life. The project reconfigures the ground floor to create open sightlines from the entrance to the garden, replacing compartmentalized rooms with fluid spaces connected by natural light. A sculptural staircase serves as the visual anchor of the home, guiding movement through its new double-height volume. Materials such as oak, steel, and glass bring warmth and structure, balancing craftsmanship with modern simplicity.

The lower level has been adapted into a social hub designed for film viewing and gatherings, with flexibility for future use. Sustainable systems, including passive ventilation and energy-efficient glazing, ensure long-term comfort and performance. The transformation preserves the house’s original character while giving it a renewed sense of openness and functionality, turning a traditional structure into an adaptable home for contemporary family life.
