Century-Old Brick Townhouse Expansions

Archi-Tectonics Completes the London Solar House

Archi-Tectonics has transformed a two-story century-old brick townhouse in London's Primrose Hill neighborhood into the London Solar House — a three-story 2,250 square foot home for a family of four. This project figures as "a prototype for high-density urban living."

Archi-Tectonics’ intervention doubled the original size of the structure through a multi-faceted roof extension and hovering projections wrapped in a folded zinc-and-glass envelope. The firm installed fully integrated photovoltaic panels on the roof that provide baseline electricity for heat pumps, hot water, lighting, and a 13-kilowatt Tesla battery to charge an electric car.

The interior of the London Solar House features a custom-built solid-steel helix staircase that winds from the entrance floor through the double-height living area to the open kitchen and dining level. High-contrast black raw wood cladding, textured stone surfaces, brass mosaics, and precious glass pendants deliver aesthetically pleasing sensibilities.

Adaptive Roof Extensions
Rising adoption of multi-level rooftop expansions in dense cities enables significant increases in living area without horizontal sprawl, suggesting new models of vertical retrofit.
Integrated Residential Energy Systems
Fully integrated rooftop photovoltaics paired with domestic batteries and heat pumps create self-sufficient residential energy ecosystems that challenge utility-centric models.
Prefabricated High-contrast Interiors
Mixing industrial materials with bespoke prefabricated elements yields high-contrast interiors that accelerate customizable, factory-built luxury retrofit components.

Where This Applies

Urban Residential Development
Historic townhouse neighborhoods are being reimagined through cantilevered volume additions and rooftop reprogramming that disrupt traditional zoning-driven density limits.
Renewable Energy Storage and Home Grid
Residential-scale batteries combined with vehicle charging and smart loads blur boundaries between transportation and home energy, offering alternatives to centralized grid services.
Architectural Fabrication and Materials
Demand for folded metal-glass envelopes, custom steel staircases, and artisanal finishes drives interest in modular, high-precision fabrication workflows that reduce on-site labor intensity.
