The Waverley House Transforms a 1950s Bungalow with Verdant Integration

— December 3, 2025 — Art & Design
The Waverley House transforms a 1950s bungalow into a garden-connected contemporary family home by embedding living spaces within the subtropical landscape surrounding the site. The renovation designed by Sam Crawford Architects lowers the ground floor to meet the garden level and carves a central lightwell to draw daylight deep into the plan. These adjustments allow the original structure and garden to coexist while giving the house a new spatial flow.

The home centres around a custom spotted-gum staircase that links layered living zones while preserving privacy and flow. Timber cladding, natural materials and framed glimpses of mature Moreton Bay figs frame a home rooted in its natural context. The layout balances communal areas and private retreat, offering space for play, quiet reflection and family life under one roof.
