Adaptive Family Homes

Carlton Cottage Extension Rethinks Terrace Living for Flexibility

The Carlton Cottage extension rethinks terrace living for flexibility by transforming a neglected Victorian workers’ cottage into a light-filled adaptable home for its architect owners. Lovell Burton retained the original front four-room footprint while adding a two-storey extension to the rear, reconfiguring spaces with an open plan that includes a kitchen, dining and living area flowing through pivoting timber-glass doors into a garden and courtyard.

The design prioritises loose fit and long life, weaving in materials like recycled brick, solid walnut, steel mesh and burnished concrete to combine durability with warmth. A mezzanine level above the addition serves multiple functions—bedroom, workspace or retreat—while sliding panels and large skillion roofs allow light and ventilation throughout the house. Although the facade remains quiet and consistent with neighbouring terraces, the interior speaks to evolving family needs, showing how gentle additions can support daily life without erasing history.
