Autonomous satellite servicing is expanding the capabilities of spacecraft with Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), a multi-function platform designed to service satellites directly in orbit. Developed with DARPA, the MRV features two articulated robotic arms that can support satellite inspection, relocation, repair, upgrades, debris removal, and in-space assembly. Three Mission Extension Pods also launched alongside the vehicle, providing supplemental propulsion that can extend satellite lifespans and improve maneuverability. The MRV includes an on-orbit refueling interface and processing capabilities for future AI-powered operations.
From a business perspective, servicing satellites after launch could help government and commercial operators protect expensive space assets while reducing the need for premature replacements. Smaller Mission Extension Pods also provide a more affordable option for extending spacecraft operations. Northrop Grumman's platform could create recurring servicing opportunities while supporting a broader market for repair, refueling, maintenance, and infrastructure in orbit.
