By dint of its very existence, TVision Insights is a company that shows just how far audience metrics have come since the early days of television ratings. TVision Insights uses impressive technology like eye-tracking through infrared sensors to gauge how audiences are responding to the programs they watch.
Though today it seems quaint, the earliest forms of television audience monitoring consisted entirely of journals that viewers filled out themselves and sent in to the ratings firms. As digital media have risen in popularity, the ability to track specific metrics such as demographics and minute viewing habits have risen in kind.
