'Spoiler Alert' is a new surplus food donation app that makes it easier for grocery stores to donate their extra inventory. Currently there are a number of barriers that prevent supermarkets from easily unloading their unwanted or extra food inventory. The Spoiler Alert app streamlines the process and makes it easier for stores to connect to local non-profit organizations.
The Spoiler Alert works by directly connecting grocery retailers, producers and suppliers to local non-profit organizations who will accept their donations of surplus food. If the food is beyond the point that it is edible, the app can also connect grocers with companies that make fertilizer and animal feed. The idea is that no surplus food will go to waste, even if it is beyond the point of consumption.
The surplus food donation app recently underwent a three month pilot program with eight organizations in the Boston area. In just a three month period, the app helped coordinate the donation of over 10,000 pounds of food.
