Surgeons in France filmed a hip replacement operation before turning it into an incredible -- and incredibly queasy -- virtual reality surgery video. The video can be downloaded for the Oculus Rift and viewed in its immersive environment. The project was carried out to look into whether virtual reality Oculus Rift videos could be useful as teaching tools.
Dr. Thomas Gregory wore a head-mounted GoPro Dual Hero system, which uses a pair of cameras to capture stereoscopic 3D video that works in a virtual reality environment. By making the video compatible with Oculus Rift, doctors can put others in their shoes and make them experience what it is like to perform surgery.
Such virtual reality surgery videos could become very useful to train medical students and trainee surgeons and give them an excellent view of proceedings.
