Charleston County Public Library Develops Sensory Toolkits

Charleston County Public Library has introduced sensory toolkits across its branches, with the aim of creating a more inclusive environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities. This initiative was supported by a grant from Volvo Cars USA. The kits were developed with input from the Lowcountry Autism Foundation.

Charleston County Public Library's new sensory toolkits include items like noise-reduction headphones, sensory mats, and fidget tools to help users manage sensory overload, focus, and feel comfortable in library spaces. In addition to the toolkits, the library is developing other resources, including Social Stories and Visual Schedules developing other resources, including Social Stories and Visual Schedules. Set to launch in 2025, these will further support Neurodivergent patrons by providing structured guides for library navigation.
