Mathematically Perfect Pizzas

Dr. Eugenia Cheng Develops a Formula for Perfect Pizza

Dr. Eugenia Cheng is a mathematician who came up with a formula that delivers a perfect pizza. If you've eaten pizza at any point in your life, chances are you've come across a slice that is too heavy or lacking on sauce, crust or an even assortment of your favorite toppings.

Cheng's research comes from the University of Sheffield and describes "a direct correlation between the size of a pizza and the experience of eating it." But it doesn't take much math to figure out that more toppings equal more mouthfuls of flavor.

Although this might seem like a silly use of math, PizzaExpress, a UK pizza chain is taking this research to heart. Inspired by Cheng's perfect pizza formula, it added 15 grams of dough to its recipe.

Perfect Pizza Formula
The development of a mathematical formula for creating the perfect pizza presents opportunities for restaurants and food industry professionals to optimize their pizza-making processes for consistent quality and customer satisfaction.
Customization and Personalization
The research on pizza toppings and their impact on the eating experience highlights the growing trend of customization and personalization in the food industry, offering opportunities for businesses to offer varied options and unique dining experiences.
Applying Math to Culinary Arts
The application of mathematics in food research, as seen in the study of pizza perfection, opens up possibilities for collaboration between mathematicians, chefs, and food scientists for innovative culinary creations and improved dining experiences.

Who This Affects Most
