Inspired to reduce food waste, three Milan designers created the Peel Saver as a means to utilizing every aspect of a potato when making and selling fries. Created by Simone Caronni, Pietro Gaeli, and Paolo Stefano Gentile, the Peel Saver repurposes spent potato peels and transforms them into packaging for their fried starchy end-product. This transformation is completed by a drying and maceration process that enables the skins to serve as disposable and clean containers.
The resulting Peel Saver is 100% biodegradable and can easily be repurposed as animal food or plant fertilizer. This new packaging serves as a prime replacement for plastic or paper alternatives and according to Caronni, "Peel Saver is a sustainable remedy whose aim is to replace plasticized paper packaging.”
