Yuri Suzuki Designs the Otonomori Playground in Shanghai

Japanese designer Yuri Suzuki has created the Otonomori sculpture which is a unique sound installation for a sculpture park located in Shanghai. The installation has a horn-shaped speaking tube paired with various swings and slides as a playful gathering space. It is designed for the 2024 Jing'an International Sculpture Project. The designer wanted to form a communal area that encourages play, communication, and rest.
Suzuki explains to Dezeen, "My main goal was to design a space that is open and welcoming, without barriers or intimidation. The sculpture invites people to gather, explore and engage with sound naturally and intuitively." The entire sculpture is acoustic. He adds, "Its horn-like structures naturally amplify, enhance and collect sound, creating an immersive listening environment. Because of its large scale, the sculpture also creates natural resonance, reverb and delay effects, making sound an integral part of the experience."
