Public Playground Installations

Welcome Little Stranger is a Sculptural Playground Built in Genk

The Welcome Little Stranger playground is a public play installation designed by Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck and artist Emma Ribbens at the C-mine site in Genk, Belgium. The playground is composed of brightly coloured sculptural elements shaped to resemble abstract alien forms, creating a physical environment for climbing, crawling, and imaginative play. Structures vary in height and scale to support different age groups, with smooth surfaces and rounded edges integrated throughout.

The installation was developed following workshops with local children, whose drawings and ideas informed the final forms and motifs. Materials include durable painted metal and composite surfaces suited for long-term outdoor use. The playground is fully analogue, with no digital or interactive technology embedded in the structures.
