When I visited Japan, like photographer Nathalie Daoust I noted a sexual undertone towards the kitsch. Beneath a rather reserved (and sometimes even stern) facade, there lies a wild beast of almost insatiable, kinky delights. It isn't present in every Japanese individual, but the tension is there within local culture nonetheless.
Nathalie Daoust captures this seedier lifestyle in her 'Tokyo Love Hotel' series. Visiting themed brothels across the city, she documents women in various compromising positions -- quite literally, at times. The gallery has only a sample of her collection.
