Nearly all devices on the consumer electronics market are powered by lithium battery packs, which is why this new technological research is so prevalent. Researchers at the Pennsylvania State University have developed a lithium-ion battery that can stay optimally functional in freezing temperatures.
Traditional lithium-based batteries will either offer a reduction in power output or simply stop working in freezing temperatures. As technologies such as UAVs and space travel increase the need for batteries that will continue to function in sub-zero temperatures, the new technology could revolutionize the industry.
The lithium battery packs enable the ability to warm themselves to prevent power loss, which would be welcome news to not only those in the science world, but also drivers of electric vehicles and beyond.
